UPLOADED 21 OCTOBER, 2019
Tokyo Fashion Technology Lab (TFL), a school for working adults, and the PLUG IN office have launched an industry-academia joint project ahead of the October show.
Twenty-five current and former students of the school are taking part in the project. With guidance from experts including fashion consultant Kensuke Kojima as mentors, and with cooperation from 3D modelers, textile mills, CAD/CAM makers, sewing factories, and others, the project got underway this spring. It aims to propose mass customization as a micro business model that runs seamlessly from upstream to downstream.
Working toward a proposal for mass customization, with lively discussion underway
The group meets every weekend for discussion, actively debating questions such as: Do consumers actually want customization? Can made-to-order production break the industry's habit of overproduction and disposal? What about borderless design and the sale of CAD data? What about an eco-system that creates employment in local regions and developing countries? How can we increase the number of garments that are worn for a long time and cherished?
A factory tour is also planned, and by the show the group aims to present a business model that makes use of technology and IoT.
